A Vegetative Treatment System (VTS) will be established at each of five feedlots in South Dakota. Performance of each of the five VTS's will be measured by monitoring the inflows to and outflows from the vegetated area. Inflow and outflow samples will be collected and nutrients (N and P), salts, sediment, and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations will be measured. From these measurements and others, water and salt balances, flows and removal of nutrients, sediment removal, and fecal coliforms in the vegetated area will be determined. Simulations of a basin and a VTS will be run for each of the five sites and the simulated basin performance will be compared to simulated and measured VTS performance. Economic analysis will be completed to compare the costs and returns from a basin and VTS at each of the five sites.
